Food Tour: Kranji Countryside Farmers’ Market

Promoted as Singapore’s first ever authentic farmers’ market, the Kranji Countryside Farmers’ Market featured an exciting lineup of products grown or made locally. Despite the blazing weather, we trooped down to D’Kranji Farm Resort, arriving at the venue at about 4.15pm. The market opened at 4, and by the time we got there, the parking spaces closest to the resort were all taken up.

The market featured a whole gamut of produce. From organic vegetables and potted herbs to locally produced jams and nut butters, this whole place was a treat for the senses – if you could bear the heat. As expected, the stall that sported the longest queue was Uncle G’s Handmade, selling crispy roast pork. I had gone to the market without eating lunch and was hoping to find a number of stalls selling ready-to-eat, cooked-on-the-spot food. Alas, besides Uncle G’s, the only other “foodstall” was by Etna. I couldn’t be bothered to queue up for Uncle G’s so I just had to wander through the market with a growling stomach. #sadface

Many of the stalls allowed visitors to sample their goods for free. However, the crowd in front of every stall was pretty overwhelming and I found I had to elbow my way to get to the front of any stall. Even waiting to pay for a bottle of juice was a test of patience. But I didn’t go expecting things to be cool, calm and orderly so I took everything in my stride and enjoyed the market for what it was supposed to be.

My day’s haul included a jar of nut butter by The Hunters’ Kitchenette, a jar of super-spicy chilli by Mofo Chili called Final Destination (yep, it’s not for those with delicate tongues), two bottles of juices from Daily Juice, and Bollywood Veggies‘ book “The Kampong Garden: Ways of the Gentle Warrior” (which, coincidentally was written by my friend!).

Overall, it was an awesome experience and I’m definitely looking forward to the next one! Who knows, maybe by then I can pull up enough resources to sell my bakes there!
