Method
- Combine warm milk, melted butter, and salt in a bowl.
- Gradually mix in cornmeal until a soft dough forms.
- Let dough rest for 5 minutes.
- Divide dough into 8 portions and flatten into discs.
- Place shredded cheese in the center and seal the dough around it.
- Shape into patties about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat butter or oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Cook arepas 4–5 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Cook a few extra minutes to ensure cheese melts inside.
Notes
For extra flavor, brush arepas with butter after cooking and serve hot with fresh cheese or avocado.
