Ingredients
  

Caramel Base
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tbsp light corn syrup
French Toast
  • 1 loaf brioche or challah bread sliced thick
  • 5 eggs large
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.75 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 0.5 tsp salt

Method
 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. Melt butter in a saucepan. Stir in brown sugar and corn syrup until smooth and bubbly.
  3. Pour caramel mixture into prepared baking dish.
  4. Arrange sliced bread over caramel in an even layer.
  5. Whisk eggs, cream, milk, sugar, vanilla, and salt until combined.
  6. Pour custard evenly over bread. Press gently to soak.
  7. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
  8. Bake 35-40 minutes until golden and set. Rest before serving.

Notes

For extra caramelization, broil 1-2 minutes before serving. Best served warm with fresh berries.
